Rubelite (Pink Tourmaline)
Pink tourmaline, also called rubelite, is one of the most valuable kinds of tourmaline. The most important determiner of the value of a rubelite is its color. The best rubelites are a strong, bright, glowing deep pink. After color, the most important factor is its clarity. Perfectly clear rubelite is hard to find, though, so slightly imperfect clarity won’t hinder the value very much. The next most important factor is the size of the pink tourmaline. Rubelites over 3 carats are quite rare and will have a premium on the per carat price. Rubelites over 5 carats are even rarer and can cost thousands of dollars.
Rubelite Tourmaline, the alternate stone for October's birthstone, is the most prized of the Tourmaline Family. It is a well documented fact that it was Emperor Napoleon´s favourite Gemstone. It varies in colour from a soft pale pink, through intense bubble gum pink, through raspberry red to the rare and very valuable deep intense pigeon blood red colour of Ruby fame. To date, this colour has only been found in the Cruziero mine in Minas Gerais. This deposit was mined out very quickly inthe late 1970's, but the name is still wispered in collector circles.
Rare in the Tourmaline family, Rubelite commonly contains minor inclusions and are accepted much the same as the inclusions in Emeralds. Occasionally we see flawless to near flawless gems and these are truly amazing.
Also, due to the rarity, we don't see as many larger stones, and so, gems in the 3 to 5 carat sizes are the norm. We have seen a huge increase in global demand as a replacement stone for Ruby, so unfortunately we've seen the prices climb in recent years, but a very very nice stone in that 3 to 5 carat size can still be found for $500 to $1,000 per carat.
